One of the many paths to a happier, more positive, more joyous life is to step out of your comfort zone from time-to-time. I’m doing just that with a new format on this page. The Q & A format is new for me. Let’s see if it works!
Q. Who can benefit from happiness coaching?
A. Just about everybody, because, thanks to our biology, we are all hard-wired for negativity. Furthermore, our brains continue to develop and grow new pathways throughout our lives. With our negative bias, we are busy building more and more negativity into our brains. It’s a vicious cycle! But the good news is, we can change — we can rewire our brains to become more positive and healthy — what neuropsychologist Rick Hanson calls “Hardwiring for Happiness” in his remarkable and highly recommended book. However, that change is hard work. Having a happiness coach in your corner can be very helpful!
Q. Why a coach?
A. We are creatures of habit. Everyone who has tried to lose weight or stop smoking or make a myriad of other major life changes knows that building new habits is challenging work. Having someone who understands the process, who knows how to listen, and who has a toolbox full of helpful strategies can greatly increase your odds of successfully crafting a happier life — to the great benefit of you and those around you as well.
Q. Is this therapy?
A. Happiness coaching is definitely not therapy — not with me, at any rate. I am not a therapist. I have a master’s in mediation and applied conflict studies and will have a certificate in positive psychology in the coming months. I am a trained coach. Sessions with me are interactive, upbeat, and determined by your needs. I want you to be happier, and I will use my training and expertise to help you chart your own autonomous path forward.
A. Generally speaking, I meet with folks in my office in Montpelier, Vermont. We could also do this through Skype or some other form of video chatting — though face-to-face is really preferable. We meet for about an hour of listening and sharing ideas. You’ll leave with homework — tools to help you actively build your skills for more positive living. You may choose to meet once a month, or once every other week — depending on your life, what you need, and what will serve you best.
A. Happiness is a choice. It truly is — I am happy to share more about that with you face-to-face. But undeniably, there are many reasons happiness is good for you, and your happiness is good for the planet. Happiness is not self-indulgent — quite the opposite, really. If you want to be of service to others in this life, you definitely want to build your happiness muscles because that will make you more compassionate, more resilient, more creative, healthier, more optimistic, and a more joyful person for others to be around.
Q. How much does it cost?
A. I am coaching within a “gift economy” framework. Normally, I would charge $80 an hour but I leave it up to you to determine how much you wish to pay. Some have paid less, some have paid more. It is your choice. Really.
Q. How do I get started?
A. Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions or to set up an appointment. The first half hour is a free consultation. Together we can then determine the next steps.
